Martha Pettway (1911–2005), Housetop—"Half-Log Cabin" variation, 1930s
Cotton, 82 x 75 in.; Toledo Museum of Art, Museum purchase and gift of the Souls Grown Deep Foundation
Martha Pettway was one of the most important quilters in Gee's Bend in the early twentieth century. Unlike other quilters in the area, she carefully preserved her favorite quilts from her young childbearing days (c. 1928-35).
These images show the entirety of the quilts, including their handmade edges, against a white background.
