Sue Willie Seltzer (1922–2010), "Housetop"—nine-block "Half-Log Cabin" variation, c. 1955
Cotton and synthetic blends, 80 x 76 in.; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Gift of the Souls Grown Deep Foundation
Sue Willie Seltzer found it difficult to put together pieced blocks in traditional patchwork patterns and instead used “strings" of squares and rectangles to construct dynamic abstractions, often contrasting two colors or tonalities.
These images show the entirety of the quilts, including their handmade edges, against a white background.
