Martha Pettway was one of the most important quilters in Gee's Bend in the early twentieth century. Unlike other quilters in the area, she carefully preserved her favorite quilts from her young childbearing days (c. 1928-35).
Here the focus is on the inherent design elements and abstract imagery in the quilts rather than as finished objects.
